Why Choose Sclerotherapy for
Treating Your Unhealthy Veins

At Vascular Health Centers we treat varicose veins and spider veins with a minimally invasive treatment called Sclerotherapy. Here is what you can expect from this highly effective procedure:

How Sclerotherapy Works
Our doctor uses a needle to inject a special solution into your varicose vein or spider vein. This chemical solution irritates your blood vessel lining, making it expand, stick together and form a scar. This closes off your vein, making it look and feel better. Depending on the severity of the condition, sclerotherapy treatment for venous problems can take about 30-45 minutes. If you’re getting treatment on your legs, our doctor may have you lie on your back with your legs elevated. Depending on how far below your skin the damaged vein is, our doctor may use an ultrasound as part of the procedure. The procedure begins with our doctor cleaning the skin around the targeted veins. With a fine needle, our doctor will inject the damaged vein with a sclerosing agent, such as:

The liquid or foam solution causes the walls of the injected vein to seal shut, so blood is redirected to unaffected veins. Over time, your body absorbs the damaged vein, making it less visible and uncomfortable.

Based on the size of the treated vein or veins, you may need a few treatment sessions.

Vein Screening
What to Expect During
Your Free Vein Screening

At these screening events, we invite you to come to our office and have an ultra sound. This is a quick 5-minute screening and consultation that helps determine if varicose veins are present.

The screening technician will evaluate two of the main sources of vein disease, the great saphenous vein and the small saphenous vein.

The technician will apply ultrasound gel to the leg, and place the probe on the leg. Then, the veins are evaluated and the patient is informed of any present vein.

After the ultrasound, a doctor or nurse practitioner will meet with you to discuss the ultrasound with you as well as answer any questions you may have about varicose veins.

After your meeting, we will have insurance specialists on hand that can answer questions about insurance coverage and any requirements the insurance may have you meet before treatment.

If you do not have insurance, do not worry, the insurance specialist can go over self-pay options with you.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

Varicose veins are enlarged "rope-like" veins — blood vessels — that are swollen and raised above the surface of the skin. They can be flesh-colored, dark purple, or blue, and often look like a cluster of grapes. They are commonly found on the back of the calves or the inside of the legs. However, they can form anywhere on the legs, from groin to ankle.

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but they are smaller and closer to the surface of the skin. They are often red or blue, and look like tree branches or spider webs. They can occur anywhere on the legs, and can cover either a very small or very large area of skin. They don't bulge like varicose veins, but are often more noticeable.

Spider veins can be caused by hormonal changes, sun damage or local injury. They can also occur as a result of larger underlying varicose veins which are not always visible. It is important that spider veins are fully investigated using ultrasound to identify the incompetent valves within veins the cause varicose veins, as failure to treat these usually results in early recurrence of spider veins and a poor cosmetic outcome.

Common risk factors for varicose and spider veins include:

  • Increasing age
  • Family history
  • Pregnancy and hormonal changes
  • Obesity
  • Prolonged standing
  • Prior deep venous thrombosis

Spider veins are often found on the legs or face, and look like red, blue or purple spider webs just under the skin. They do not make the skin bulge like varicose veins do.

Spider veins can affect anyone, but are most commonly found in women. The causes of spider veins vary from person to person, so if you get spider veins it is important to see a specialist to find out what caused them.

Sclerotherapy is an injection procedure to treat spider veins and small varicose veins. The procedure involves injection of a sterile solution (called a sclerosing solution) into the small veins using a very fine needle. This solution irritates the vein lining causing it to undergo fibrosis and eventually disappear. Many veins are injected at each session.

The spider veins are destroyed by injecting a small amount of a sclerosing solution into the vein. The sclerosing solution used may be either polidocanol (Sclerovein) or sodium tetradecylsulfate (Fibrovein). The chemical irritates the small vein and causes it to undergo fibrosis and eventually disappear.
The treatment of large varicose veins is a little different than for thread veins. The technique of ‘ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy‘ uses a foamed sclerosant to treat large varicose veins. It has been shown to be a safe and effective method of treating varicose veins leading to long term freedom from troublesome veins.
It varies from individual to individual but typically 2-4 treatments are required for the best results. In patients with a few veins, 1-2 sessions will suffice. More treatments are required where veins are more numerous and extensive.
There is a little sting associated with each injection which lasts a few seconds. Most individuals tolerate the procedure and do not require any type of anesthesia. The majority of patients claim that the procedure is much less painful than they anticipated.
